How to Use ChatGPT to Find Media Outlets to Pitch: A 5-Step Guide

How to Use ChatGPT to Find Media Outlets to Pitch: A 5-Step Guide

ChatGPT is an incredible resource at our FINGERTIPS and if you're an entrepreneur who is NOT using artificial intelligence (AI) to get ahead, stop reading this and go sign up for it RIGHT NOW.

ChatGPT is an incredible tool that's capable of understanding and generating human-like text, and it is an excellent tool for finding media outlets to pitch to.

Here's how I use it. (And believe me, I use AI a lot in my business.)

Step 1: Open ChatGPT and Straight Up Ask It for Media Outlet Recommendations

It's as simple as that. Whatever your business is, type it in the search bar. Something along the lines of this: Can you suggest media outlets that cover sustainability and eco-friendly products, with a focus on consumer lifestyle?

Now, ChatGPT is going to spit out a bunch of media outlets. (Tip: if it only gives you one, ask it again but change it to say: Can you suggest 10 media outlets that cover sustainability and eco-friendly products, with a focus on consumer lifestyle?

This will give you a great list of 10 outlets to look into. With AI, it's always good to provide it with as much information about your target audience, industry, and any specific preferences you can. This will help narrow down any broad outlets it suggests.

Step 2: Research and Verify Media Outlets

It doesn't matter what you use AI for, it's ALWAYS essential to research and verify the information it gives. AI isn't perfect, so be sure to visit the website of the outlets it's suggesting and make sure that your story aligns with their content.

Step 3: Gather Contact Information

While ChatGPT can sometimes help you find contact information, this step may require additional manual research. Visit the media outlets' "Contact Us" or "About Us" pages to locate the right contacts, such as editors or journalists who cover your niche. This is a good thing to do because many smaller outlets provide submission guidelines for your story pitches, so be sure to check at the bottom of websites for this type of section! Not all outlets, but some do so it's worth a shot!

Step 4: Craft Your Compelling Pitch

Compelling is the name of the game here. You want to be sure that your pitch really resonates with the media editor you're pitching to. Once you have a list of suitable media outlets and contact information, you can use ChatGPT to help you draft a compelling pitch. It can assist in creating a concise and engaging message that highlights the value of your story.

Step 5: Reach Out and Follow Up

Send your pitches to the identified media outlets and contacts. Be sure to follow up politely if you don't receive a response initially. Persistence and professionalism are key in media outreach.

Tip: Do NOT use ChatGPT or other AI-assisted systems to write your article for you if your story gets approved. This is a big no-no and it will get you blacklisted should a media editor find out you did.

Bottom line

Why reinvent the wheel when ChatGPT can be an incredible resource for all entrepreneurs. Use ChatGPT to discover media outlets for your pitch and significantly streamline your outreach efforts. By harnessing the AI's ability to generate recommend outlets, and assist in content creation, you can enhance the effectiveness of your media outreach campaign. Remember that while ChatGPT is a powerful tool, it should complement your research and communication skills to ensure a successful pitch. AI should be used in tandem with whatever else you're not doing. With the right strategy and AI assistance, you can increase your chances of gaining valuable media coverage and reaching your target audience effectively.
